"What if..." Mini Grants

Through our “What If” Mini-grant Initiative, the Foundation seeks to fund neighborhood associations made up of concerned citizens as they work to develop their neighborhood’s resources and assets.  This includes supporting efforts that encourage inclusion of diverse populations in decisions that affect their community.

In order to receive application guidelines we ask that you attend an informational meeting.

These are scheduled the SECOND THURSDAY OF EVERY MONTH FROM 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm in the Lower Level Conference room of the First Niagara building, 126 North Salina Street (corner of James and North Salina - where the Gifford offices are located).

*Please Note*There will not be a July or December "What If" Mini-Grant orientation

RSVPs are required by calling Kim Vanderhoef at 315-474-2489 or by email at kim@giffordfoundation.org.

To respond please identify the session you would like to attend, your name, organization, email address and phone number.

These grants are given for projects with a total budget of $5,000 or less for neighborhoods within the City of Syracuse. We look to support efforts to build community capacity through the following:

  • Projects that create a clean, safe physical environment, promote sustainability, and protect the natural environment such as gardens, neighborhood clean-ups, tree planting, etc.

  •  Projects that create opportunities for learning and skill development such as workshops, trainings, afterschool programs, etc.

  • Projects that preserve a strong local, cultural and spiritual heritage such as celebrations, art projects/programs, street festivals, etc.

  • Projects that are supportive of individual and family well-being such as food programs, neighborhood watch programs, youth employment, etc.

  PLEASE NOTE

  1. The Foundation rarely funds 100% of a project.
  2. No funds will be distributed to individuals, or for reimbursements.
  3.  Your group and/or organization must reside in the City of Syracuse.
  4. If your group and/or organization is NOT a 501(c)3, you WILL need a fiscal agent. Please note that foundation staff is willing to help find a fiscal agent if needed. More details will be explained at orientation.
  5. Project must be neighborhood/community based, initiated and implemented by residents living in the community
  6. Attendance at a pre-application orientation (at least 2 people involved in the project) is required.
  7. 85% involvement required (volunteers, neighborhood support, sweat equity, donations etc.) The nature of achieving this will be explained in the orientation session.
  8. Collaborations are encouraged and will be viewed under special consideration.

The following types of grassroots/community groups are encouraged to apply:

  • Informal neighborhood groups including neighbors who live in an apartment or apartment complex.
  • Formal neighborhood groups such as homeowner associations, parent teacher associations, neighborhood watch associations, and more.
  • Groups working with young children and families in a neighborhood, such as library groups, informal childcare providers.
